Today we decided to visit the Turtle conservatory and education center on Serangan Island close to Sanur.
The center was opened in 2006 after they saw a drastic decrease in a number of turtles on the islands.
The island was known as a turle- island, but the before 2006 they struggled to find any nestingspots or turtles in the sea around on the island. Therefore they opened
the center to both rehabilitate and bread turtles, but also to educate school kids and visitors on how to keep the sea clean and take care of the turtles.
They invite both schools and tourist to come and visit the center and the entrance is free. They depend on the visitors donation and adoptions of the turtles to be able to continoue their center. We had a guide following us around to give us information on the the different turtles they had on the sanctuary and about how the center is managed.
Together with rehabilitation of injured turtles they also breed turtles to increase the amount of turtles in the sea. They told us that this morning they actually had a breading of around 100 babies. 3 of them were so exhausted after cracking their shell so they needed a nap in a basket while they gathered more energy to crawl all the way out of the shell.
We decided to adopt a baby turtle and also release him into the big ocean. We called him Børre and it was quite a special moment to see him swimming away from us.
After the visit to the center we stopped at the boatcompany called Scoot to buy tickets for our trip to Nusa Lembongan tomorrow. The last time we used a boat from Bali we thought we were going to die, so we are a bit nervous ebout the trip tomorrow.
The rest of the day has been used to relax and walking a bit around in the area close to the hotel.
We are now looking forward to spending some days on smaller island around Bali.
Good night!
